Ford’s most significant model from the postwar period was undoubtedly the Mustang, and it stunned the world when introduced. It had handsome long-hood, short-deck styling, comfort and performance even in standard trim, and was also quite affordable. Smaller and nimbler than the average muscle car, yet still powerful, the Mustang created the now-iconic “Pony Car” category.
This lovely convertible from the first full year of production is finished in era-evoking light yellow over a black interior and believed to have been sold new in Massachusetts, as it retains a Cohasset Motors Inc. dealer badge. The car was equipped with an automatic transmission and Ford’s legendary 289 cid V-8 engine, which proved essential to the brand’s 1960s racing efforts.
This Mustang was acquired by its second owner, Ronald Bamber of Nantucket, Massachusetts, in 1985 with just 23,820 miles on the odometer. Mr. Bamber retained the Mustang for an impressive 40 years until it was acquired by the consignor in early 2025.
This 289 Convertible presents as an extremely well-preserved,unrestored example, displaying numerous rare original details, including informational stickers in the trunk and engine compartment. The car also features a rarely seen Mustang hood ornament, which was a period dealer option. With so many Mustangs lost to accidents and extensive modification, this is a rare opportunity to acquire an outstanding representation of the model’s influential original design.
