The 365 GT4 BB of 1973 marked a radical departure from previous road-going 12-cylinder Ferraris, swapping the traditional front-mounted, 60° V-12 of its predecessors for a flat-12 mounted midship. Though BB denoted “Berlinetta Boxer,” its engine was more accurately described as a 180° unit, with each opposing cylinder sharing a common crank pin, thus avoiding the “boxing” piston motion characteristic of Porsche flat-sixes.

Regardless of the quirks of its chosen nomenclature, the BB was a knockout machine by any standard, bringing Ferrari fully up to date with the latest in 1970s supercar technology. By 1981, carburetors were no longer in vogue, resulting in the third and final evolution of the line that introduced fuel injection, and thoroughly aligning the two-seat flagship with contemporary standards. Sharing a 4.9-liter displacement with the penultimate Berlinetta Boxer, or 512 BB, the new Bosch K-Jetronic-equipped swan song gained a lowercase “i” suffix quietly denoting iniezione. This 512 BBi is among the final examples built and remains in beautifully preserved condition, displaying just 4,545 miles when catalogued. Benefiting from a recent extensive engine-out belt service by specialist DriverSource, as documented by invoices on file, this extraordinary BBi is accompanied by its original books, tools, and accessories, including a factory lead hammer for use with its elegant knock-off wheels. Resplendent in its original, hand-formed Scaglietti bodywork, this late-production car offers the best possible combination of performance, driveability, and provenance.
