The Ford GT40 is one of the most significant cars in American automotive history, made famous by its four consecutive victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans between 1966 and 1969. In the early 2000s, as Ford was preparing for its 100th anniversary, the company wanted to develop a limited run of supercars that would pay tribute to the legendary race car. First shown in concept form at the 2002 North American International Auto Show, the “GT40 Concept” was a stunning modern interpretation of the original race car, updated just enough to look fresh and modern.
Within months of the concept car’s debut, Ford announced its plans to build a production variant, and orders began rolling in. Although deliveries did not occur during Ford’s centennial in 2003, the design integrated a hidden “100” in the left headlight to memorialize the achievement. Deliveries began for the GT in fall 2004 for the 2005 model year, and production spanned 2005 and 2006, during which time a total of 4,038 cars were built. To keep production simple, aside from color selection, the GT was only offered with four options: forged alloy wheels, racing stripes, a McIntosh stereo, and painted brake calipers.
The GT is powered by an Eaton-supercharged 5.4-liter V-8 producing 550 hp and 500 lbs./ft. mated to a Ricardo six-speed manual transaxle and limited-slip differential. In an era when its competition was pushing new technology, including paddle-shift gearboxes and multimode traction control, the GT eschewed all of that in favor of raw speed and driver involvement.
This 2006 Ford GT is a very special example that has been kept as a reference-grade original car, showing just 16 miles at the time of cataloguing. As a Canadian specification example, it features an extended rear bumper and daytime running lights. Imported into the US by 2024, the GT is finished in Tungsten Gray with Silver stripes and was optioned with forged alloy wheels and painted brake calipers. It still retains its original manual, delivery plastic on the seats, doorsills, and steering wheel, delivery hangtag, as well as various stickers.
For the connoisseur looking to add what is undoubtedly one of the best, most original Ford GTs in the world to their collection, look no further. Widely considered one of the greatest enthusiast cars of the early 2000s, the Ford GT will always be highly regarded for its perfectly implemented retro styling and outstanding driving dynamics. The offering of this example at auction presents the collector with an opportunity to purchase what is effectively a brand-new Ford GT from the final model year, nearly 20 years after its production.
