Pebble Beach is one of those if you know, you know car events. It’s a rare experience each year when some of the world’s most valuable, gorgeous cars pop in to say hello, and collectors clamor to snap them up. This year is no exception, especially at Gooding & Company, where two very special collections are surfacing amid their normal killer auctions.
For a limited time, you can take a peek at these beauties in their catalogue before you have an opportunity to bid at Gooding & Company’s Pebble Beach Auctions on August 16th and 17th. You can register to bid here, if we’ve already enthralled you. Oh, and did we mention that both of these collections are being sold without reserve?
The Santa Fe Collection
One half of this double header is the Santa Fe Collection. Named for the locale where these cars were cared for in a state-of-the-art facility, the collection is not to be missed. The cars were chosen for each of their unique propensities for performance.
The star of this collection is none other than the 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder (Estimate: $1,200,000 – $1,500,000, Without Reserve). It’s had one owner since new, and its rarity doesn’t stop there. It’s the 57th of 294 such cars delivered to the US, and is finished in Liquid Metal Silver, which cost the owner $63,000. It also has the addition of carbon fiber rear diffuser blades from the 918 Weissach package, making it all the more stunning.
But that’s not the only beautiful car in this collection. There are newer and older Porsches alike, including the 2018 Porsche 911 Turbo S Coupe Exclusive Series (Estimate: $250,000 - $300,000, Without Reserve, or a breathtaking 1970 Porsche 914/6 (Estimate $100,000 - $150,000, Without Reserve), which is finished in Ravenna Green over Black and Pepita, for a true vintage vibe.
There’s more to dream about here. The 1960 Aston Martin DB4 Series II (Estimate $400,000 - $500,000, Without Reserve) has been a winner in the US Concours circuit, while the 1967 Lancia Flaminia Super Sport Zagato is one of only 200 Super Sport Flaminias built. The 1962 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL is a must for any collector, and this gorgeous one comes with luggage.
And if you simply haven’t had enough mid-century greatness, you can run away with the pair of 1968 Maserati Ghibli 4.7s, or, if you prefer your cars Americano, the 1969 Plymouth Road Runner and 1963 Lincoln Continental Convertible. No matter your style, the selection has something for everyone. Or you could just buy it all in one fell swoop to create the part two video for “From the Santa Fe Collection.”
The Thomas H. Larsen Collection
This collection comes out of Boston, with its cars maintained by some of the East Coast’s best specialists. Thomas H. Larsen himself was an exceptional car enthusiast with close ties to the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, meaning that this collection was curated and maintained by some of the finest specialists out there.
We’ll start by showing off a notable favorite: the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing (Estimate $1,200,000 - $1,500,000, Without Reserve) in black over red leather. Ever a classic, this is a cornerstone in postwar auto design. Other iconic cars include the 1964 Shelby 289 Cobra (Estimate $950,000 - $1,100,000, Without Reserve) which has amazing provenance and even some TV history. If you’re strictly a Euro-car fan, this collection has that in spades– meet the Ferrari Classiche-certified 1961 Ferrari 330 GTC (Estimate $500,000 - $600,000, Without Reserve), a 1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GT (Estimate $375,000 - $475,000, Without Reserve), and a gorgeous 1957 Porsche 356 A Speedster (Estimate: $350,000 - $450,000, Without Reserve).
These collections truly have everything to make your wildest automotive dreams come true. Take, for instance, the English selections, like the 1960 Aston Martin DB4 Series I (Estimate: $375,000 - $475,000, Without Reserve), a factory left-hand drive example and iconic metallic green over green leather finishes. There’s also the expertly restored 1967 Jaguar E-Type Series I 4.2-Litre Fixed Head Coupe (Estimate $175,000 - $225,000, Without Reserve), because everybody needs an E-Type, especially when it has won numerous awards with the Jaguar Club of North America and comes with a JDHT certificate.
There are also accessible classics in this sale, like the 1957 Chevrolet Corvette 283/283 Fuel-Injected Roadster (Estimate $70,000 - $90,000, Without Reserve), one stunning 1935 Ford Model 48 Deluxe Roadster (Estimate: $40,000 - $60,000, Without Reserve), a dreamy 1955 Ford Thunderbird (Estimate $40,000 - $60,000, Without Reserve), and a zippy yet practical 1994 Mercedes-Benz E 320 Cabriolet (Estimate: $20,000 - $30,000, Without Reserve).
If you’re like us, chances are you’ve found a couple bucket list-must haves in this duo of without-reserve collections. Their sale is bound to be thrilling with the no-reserve status, so now’s your chance. You can page through the Gooding & Company online catalogue ahead of the Pebble Beach Auctions in August with even more beautiful examples here, or register to bid if we’ve already convinced you.
